Anne Bullen 1914-1963 trained at Juliens in Paris and at Chelsea School of art was well known for her illustrations in children's pony books. She also wrote two books on ponycraft. She was however also a fine horse portraitist helped no doubt by her deep knowledge of horses. With her husband she founded the world famous Catherston Stud where they started by rescuing moorland ponies and crossing them with thoroughbreds breeding some high quality riding ponies. The stud went on to breed some wonderful horses. One of the first I remember was a beautiful horse called Desert Storm whose display at the Horse of the Year Show ridden by the daughter of Anne, Jennie Bullen, now the Olympic medalist Jennie Loriston Clarke, first triggered my interest in dressage.
