Mick Cawston

We discovered Mick Cawston when he was a struggling young artist and worked with him, publishing his prints and promoting his paintings in England and abroad for twenty years. His death at so early an age was a great loss to all who knew him and to the world of English country art.

Mick Cawston was one of the world's finest dog painters. He was also a master of anthropomorphic pictures and humorous country scenes. He had a most amazing relationship with the countryside and its people and they had a great love and admiration for him. His work is comparable to that of John Emms or Maude Earl and he worked equally well in oils, water colours or pastels. No matter what breed of dog he portrayed, the character and likeness of the dog were always superb.

Many of his prints can be seen in 'Mick Cawston, The Published Works vol 1' published by Sally Mitchell and available from www.dogart.com

Many of his works have been reproduced as limited edition prints by Sally Mitchell Fine Arts and can be seen on www.dogart.com. He was a finalist 5 times, in the Fine Art Trade Guild survey for the top selling artist of the year, winning it in 1998 and being runner up shortly before he died.

Mick's untimely death in 2006 was a great shock to everyone. Mick would have been extremely touched to see how many people mourned his passing. He was a very special person.

A major retrospective exhibition of his work was held in 2009, the works being sold in an online auction. The prices confirmed the strength of his following, many prints that were published at just £20 making into four figures. We occasionally buy in prints by him so if you are looking for anything in particular do contact us on 01777 838234. Our next specialist biennial online auction is taking place 13th - 19th May, visit the Mick Cawston Auction 2024 page for more information.
